"The right to bear arms is essential to liberty itself. It’s an insurance policy, enshrined in the Second Amendment of our Constitution to make sure America would always remain the Land of the Free." (12/21/09)

“Thomas Jefferson said, "The God who gave us life, gave us freedom to defend life." Being armed was more than a right. It was a moral obligation of citizenship. Twentieth-century history proves the wisdom of this philosophy …” (11/10/09)

George Washington said: (1) "Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples' liberty teeth." (2) "The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good."  (2/22/11)

“I simply cannot imagine being unable to defend my life or my family in the event I could not otherwise avoid a situation or impending attack … Like health or life insurance, a fire extinguisher, smoke detectors or seat belts, having a firearm, as part of your preparation skills means that you have a chance to survive should the unthinkable happen ... The point is to prepare yourself, by being aware of your surroundings and avoiding any and all confrontations at all times no matter what by using your eyes and your brains. Prepare yourself by purchasing a gun … and never be afraid to use it to defend your life or that of your family and loved ones. Although it happens to thousands of Americans every day, a lethal encounter is very rare and your odds of becoming a victim of violent crime are minimal but if and when it happens, it will happen violently and in the blink of an eye. As a mother, father, brother or sister, you have an obligation and responsibility to yourself and your family to survive.” (12/3/10)

“As explained here, firearms are the ultimate guarantor of civilization. In my discussions and debates about this issue, I’ve traditionally relied on these four arguments: 1. Respect for the Constitution. The Founding Fathers were wise to include ‘the right of the people to keep and bear arms’ in the Bill of Rights. The Second Amendment recognizes the value of a well-armed citizenry, and today’s politicians (or courts) shouldn’t be allowed to weaken that fundamental freedom. 2. The presumption of liberty. It’s sometimes said that everything that isn’t expressly forbidden is allowed in the United States, whereas in Europe it’s the other way around, with everything forbidden unless explicitly permitted. This certainly seems to be the case for guns, with most European governments prohibiting firearms ownership for the vast majority of people. 3. Personal protection against crime. As the first image in this post powerfully illustrates, it doesn’t really matter if cops are only a few minutes away when a person only has a few seconds to protect against danger. And since the evidence is overwhelming that gun ownership reduces crime, this is a powerful argument for the Second Amendment. 4. Ability to resist government oppression. Totalitarian governments invariably seek to disarm people, as this poster indicates. And with the majority of the world still living in nations that are not free, private gun ownership is at least a potential limit on thuggish governments. But perhaps we now need to add a fifth reason: 5. Personal protection against social breakdown. If politicians destroy the economic system with too much debt and too much dependency, firearms will be the first and last line of defense against those who would plunder and pillage.” (11/28/11)

“Gun control laws were originally promulgated by Democrats to keep guns out of the hands of blacks. This allowed the Democratic policy of slavery to proceed with fewer bumps and, after the Civil War, allowed the Democratic Ku Klux Klan to menace and murder black Americans with little resistance … The NRA opposed these discretionary gun permit laws and proceeded to grant NRA charters to blacks who sought to defend themselves from Klan violence -- including the great civil rights hero Robert F. Williams. A World War II Marine veteran, Williams returned home to Monroe, N.C., to find the Klan riding high -- beating, lynching and murdering blacks at will. No one would join the NAACP for fear of Klan reprisals. Williams became president of the local chapter and increased membership from six to more than 200. But it was not until he got a charter from the NRA in 1957 and founded the Black Armed Guard that the Klan got their comeuppance in Monroe. Williams' repeated thwarting of violent Klan attacks is described in his stirring book, ‘Negroes With Guns.’ In one crucial battle, the Klan sieged the home of a black physician and his wife, but Williams and his Black Armed Guard stood sentry and repelled the larger, cowardly force. And that was the end of it. As the Klan found out, it's not so much fun when the rabbit's got the gun. The NRA's proud history of fighting the Klan has been airbrushed out of the record by those who were complicit with the KKK, Jim Crow and racial terror, to wit: the Democrats. In the preface to ‘Negroes With Guns,’ Williams writes: ‘I have asserted the right of Negroes to meet the violence of the Ku Klux Klan by armed self-defense -- and have acted on it. It has always been an accepted right of Americans, as the history of our Western states proves, that where the law is unable, or unwilling, to enforce order, the citizens can, and must act in self-defense against lawless violence.’ Contrary to MSNBC hosts, I do not believe the shooting in Florida is evidence of a resurgent KKK. But wherever the truth lies in that case, gun control is always a scheme of the powerful to deprive the powerless of the right to self-defense.” (12/19/2012)

“The government-sanctioned gunrunning operation Fast and Furious was a plot to undermine Second Amendment rights in the United States … ‘Over a period of two or three years they were running thousands and thousands of guns to the most evil people on earth. At the same time they were yelling ’90 per cent… of the guns the Mexican drug cartels are using come from the United States … That was a phony figure from the very start’ … But LaPierre said that President Barack Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were determined to make it appear that most weapons used by the Mexicans came from north of the border … ‘Do we really want our Department of Justice … running thousands of guns into the hands of the Mexican drug cartels? Running a massive campaign to manipulate public opinion? Ruining the lives of good, honest American citizens when they knew the truth, and then participating in a massive cover-up.’” (4/16/2012)

“‘Botched.’ That is the word the mainstream media too often associates with the federal gunwalking scandal known as Operation Fast and Furious—but in her new book, Fast and Furious: Barack Obama's Bloodiest Scandal and Its Shameless Cover-Up, investigative reporter Katie Pavlich fearlessly chronicles exactly why the only thing ‘botched’ about the ill-fated operation was the Obama administration's shoddy attempt to cover their tracks … Despite the involved Obama appointees' best efforts to downplay the impact of their recklessness, shift blame, avoid accountability, stonewall their watchdogs, and perpetuate the ‘botched’ narrative, the unremitting investigations of Congressmen Darrell Issa, Charles Grassley, John Cornyn, and others have eventually revealed that there is something much deeper, and much more formidable, at play here than the perpetrators would like to portray … While the dubious nature of outrages like the Obama administration's Department of Energy loan guarantees and financial bailouts have illustrated the president's willingness to throw taxpayers' money around, the consequences of this scandal were, and will likely continue to be, American lives. As Katie points out, if the Obama administration is ready to be so cavalier with the Constitution and a few American lives here and there, just to push their leftist agenda—of what else are they capable?” (4/10/2012)

“And with the possibility of two or more Supreme Court justice positions opening during the next four years, the NRA official warned that gun ownership would be in jeopardy if Mr. Obama stays in office. ‘If we get one more like those three, the Second Amendment is finished,’ he said. ‘It'll be the end of our freedom forever.’ Mr. LaPierre, who said ‘there is no greater freedom than to own a firearm,’ predicted that gun owners will rally en masse to defeat Mr. Obama in November. ‘All of what we know is good and right about America, all of it could be lost if Barack Obama is re-elected,’ he said. ‘It's all or nothing.’”

“‘Lip service to gun owners is just part of a massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the Second Amendment during his second term. We see the president’s strategy crystal clear: Get re-elected and, with no more elections to worry about, get busy dismantling and destroying our firearms’ freedom, erase the Second Amendment from the Bill of Rights and excise it from the U.S. Constitution…When the sun goes down on election day Barack Obama will have America’s gun owners to thank for his defeat.’ Due to the odd trends showing a boom in gun and ammo sales during President Obama’s first term … a fear affect of an Obama second term leading to stricter gun laws, Ammo.net has produced a cheeky new graphic …” (2/25/12)

“I’ve mentioned before how I’m proud and lucky to work for the Cato Institute, first and foremost because my colleagues are scrupulously non-partisan. We promote the ideals of freedom and liberty and we’ll work with any politician of any party who happens to be on the right side. Likewise, we’ll attack statism, regardless of what political party is in charge. But I’m also proud to be at Cato because of the high-quality research. The latest example is a study looking at examples of defensive gun use. It’s a fascinating look at real-world anecdotes, augmented by references to other scholarly work … And, as the scores of incidents described in this study show, gun owners stop a lot of criminal mayhem—attempted murders, rapes, assaults, robberies—every year. …Policymakers interested in harm reduction should thus refrain from treating ordinary gun owners as hoodlums or loose cannons and adopt policies that respect the ownership and carrying of arms by responsible individuals … Self defense is a fundamental right, whether for the purpose of thwarting crime, fighting oppression, or (as I explain in my appearance on NRA-TV) protecting against societal breakdown. If you’re a fan of the Second Amendment, let’s close with some great links. Here are some anti-gun control posters that have been very popular (here, hereherehere, and here). Here are some amusing images of t-shirts and bumper stickers on gun control (herehere, and here). And here are three different videos on gun control (herehere, and here). Feel free to share all of these widely.”

“Finally breaking in, and armed with a twelve inch knife, Justin Martin came at the scared mother. Sarah McKinley shot and killed the attacker with the shotgun … the gutless leaders of Brady Bunch make no mention of Sarah McKinley--who was cleared of any wrongdoing--just as they ignore the more than 2 million successful uses of firearms in self-defense each year … The truth is a person under attack won’t be protected by a candle, and violent thugs won't be disarmed if Congress passes yet one more gun control law. Lives are saved, however, when a woman can use a firearm to defend herself against attackers twice her size.” (1/22/12)

“However, there's another commodity that historically has risen in price along with gold - and is potentially more useful in the event of a global crisis: Ammunition … a small business owner from Virginia, had this to say about why he recently purchased 2,000 rounds of 223 ammunition to go with his growing collection of AR-15 assault rifles … ‘I don't trust what's going on in Washington and a reliable firearm that'll hold it's value plus ammo that I can always re-sell later if I don't use it up seems like as safe a place as any to put my money in these uncertain times’ ... customers at Ammo.net cite as one of their primary reasons for stocking up on guns & ammo now is the uncertainty surrounding U.S. firearm regulations … ‘I know I can use my guns & ammo to feed my family if something happens to our usual food supply and there's a run at our grocery store ... I've seen what happens when times get tough and I figure I can always barter a popular caliber like 9mm for other supplies like I would with gold if push comes to shove. And if a crisis never materializes where I need my stash of ammo, I still love to shoot so those bullets won't go to waste. Given the uncertainty in our world, ammunition seems more practical to me than gold, whether there's an economic crisis or not.’" (12/23/11)

Obama’s tactics are becoming obvious. Whether it’s destroying coal to prop up green, endlessly extending unemployment benefits to keep the public desperate so as to allow him to push through more entitlements, how he intends to bring his ‘fundamental changes’ to the United States are about as veiled as laminate. He is a radical trying to institute change by manipulating the facts on the ground in order to create a narrative that allows his “solutions.”

Now comes the news that the gun walker scandal known as ‘Fast & Furious’ in which thousands of guns were permitted to cross the Mexican border, ostensibly to help the ATF track the guns to “big fish,” may have actually been used as a justification for new and stricter gun laws … The Obama manipulations to support radical change are now accessories to murder … Forcing people to do something against their better judgment so you can make the case that that very thing must be stopped is the kind of circular logic that only a radicalized Alinskyite could get behind.” (12/8/11)

“No one is immune to a criminal attack upon your home and/or your person. Since few people can afford an around the clock security team, if you think about and care about your family’s security, you need to be your own bodyguard ... Home invasions happen in a matter of seconds. If you are not prepared at the instant it happens, you could be a sitting duck … It helps to have security cameras and an alarm system ... As with fire drills, it makes sense to prepare by conducting home invasion drills … unless you live in La-La Land get the right emergency equipment and drill with it ... First, firearms are not optional ... It helps if you always have at least one gun on you at all times … If you need motivation and support, joining a good defensive firearms forum such as www.DefensiveHandguns.com will help you get it … Recognize that the small guns on you are meant to give you the opportunity to fight your way to your big guns … Don’t ever let your guard down. The key to effective home defense is to have a plan … It is a good thing if the police are alerted the instant your home alarm system goes off so that you will know that the police will (hopefully) be on their way … The police, the ‘professionals’ will arrive after the act, to secure the scene and investigate. Rarely do they save people. People save themselves ... You are your only line of immediate defense ... You can choose not to think about all of this ... It’s your choice. You can be a sentinel or a sitting duck. Do the right things now and avoid being sorry later.” [Note: Make sure to learn and follow correct gun safety procedures.] (11/22/11)

“I was training a group of police officers in Texas, and during the break, one officer asked his friend if he carried his weapon in church. The other cop replied, ‘I will never be caught without my gun in church.’ I asked why he felt so strongly about this, and he told me about a cop he knew who was at a church massacre in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1999. In that incident, a mentally deranged individual came into the church and opened fire, gunning down fourteen people. He said that officer believed he could have saved every life that day if he had been carrying his gun. His own son was shot, and all he could do was throw himself on the boy's body and wait to die. That cop looked me in the eye and said, ‘Do you have any idea how hard it would be to live with yourself after that?’ Some individuals would be horrified if they knew this police officer was carrying a weapon in church. They might call him paranoid and would probably scorn him … Their only response to the wolf, though, is denial, and all too often their response to the sheepdog is scorn and disdain. But the sheepdog quietly asks himself, ‘Do you have any idea how hard it would be to live with yourself if your loved ones were attacked and killed, and you had to stand there helplessly because you were unprepared for that day?’ It is denial that turns people into sheep … which is counterproductive and destructive, resulting in fear, helplessness and horror when the wolf shows up ... Gavin de Becker puts it like this in "Fear Less", his superb post-9/11 book … ‘And so the warrior must strive to confront denial in all aspects of his life, and prepare himself for the day when evil comes. If you are warrior who is legally authorized to carry a weapon and you step outside without that weapon, then you become a sheep, pretending that the bad man will not come today ... But if you are authorized to carry a weapon, and you walk outside without it, just take a deep breath, and say this to yourself ... ‘Baa.’” (6/9/11)

“There is a lot of work being done to protect the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment. But if you really want to win the war for our rights … The absolute best thing you can do is to teach a child how to shoot. What we teach kids today will have a lasting impact for generations. If children are taught the safe handling of firearms and the fun associated with the shooting sports, they will protect all of our rights when their time comes to stand up … After putting an untold number of BB’s downrange, she got to take a spotted Shoot-N-C target home to hang on her wall. One more child inoculated against the poison of gun control … People who fear guns exhibit irrational behavior. Arguing or reasoning with them is largely an exercise in futility. Irrational fear can be prevented, however, with positive experiences at an early age. If children are taught gun safety and experience the fun of shooting, they are not likely to ever support any government dictate that restricts their right to keep and bear arms.” (9/27/11)

“President Barack Obama wants you to believe that America's Founding Fathers were in error when they gave citizens the right to bear arms … the White House in reality is further imposing its gun control agenda on the American public through back-door rule-making ... It is also another showing of complete disregard for the Constitution … restricting the right to bear arms primarily ties the hands of good guys while the bad guys purchase them from a host of illegal sources … what part of ‘shall not be infringed’ in the Second Amendment do the feds not understand … The winner of the ‘Largest American Supplier of Guns to Mexico’ award is actually the Obama administration, via Operation Fast and Furious … As far as the Obama administration's culpability goes … Acting ATF Director Kenneth Melson told congressional investigators the agency's senior leadership would have preferred to cooperate more with the congressional investigation of the operation, but Justice Department officials directed ATF not to respond … The truth is that the Obama administration is involved right now in a monumental cover-up regarding its criminally handing over thousands of firearms to gunrunners and smugglers. And to duck and dodge its responsibility for those illegalities by now coming across as the vanguard of gun control by cracking down on the sale of two guns to an American at one time is preposterous hypocrisy ... The Obama administration is trying to not only eliminate our Second Amendment rights but also demonize good, law-abiding American gun dealers and citizens in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. It is not only smuggling its guns but also trying to take ours. And I, for one, am not going to sit back and just watch it happen.” (8/23/11)

“It does not matter why violent hooligans choose to get swept up in a viral tidal wave of violent behavior. What matters to those innocently caught up in it is how to get out of it alive with intact limbs … If you want to survive, you must be willing to do whatever you have to do to survive a lethal force confrontation if you have no other choice … Being confronted by a flash mob of violent hoodlums intent on beating you and your companions down is a grave situation. It can easily cause your death or cause you grievous bodily harm. The reality is not what is depicted in a cartoon, a slap stick comedy, or in a TV western. It is a reality horror show. The best that can happen is you get to survive with grievous injuries. You will be fighting for your life, and there will be no time to hesitate … Avoid and flee if you can. However, if you cannot …” [Note: We do not agree with everything in this article but most of it seems helpful] (8/23/11)

“Just about anyone possessing and IQ hovering right around ninety can grasp the idea that this type of legislation is not about ‘making sure this doesn't happen again’, and all about totalitarian bureaucrats exerting their power over the masses with capricious and arbitrary rules … The simple fact of the matter is, Americans are not ‘Gun Nuts’, we are ‘Freedom Nuts’. We appreciate our right to arms not because of a great perceived amount of danger we endure by threats from crazy neighbors or criminals, but the large amount of danger we fear from a government that believes it should have the power to decide whether or not we should have the right to defend ourselves … Madison and Jefferson proclaimed that this was so. Mao, Hitler, and Stalin, proved that Madison and Jefferson were correct.” (2/15/11)

“There's only one policy of any kind that has ever been shown to deter mass murder: concealed-carry laws. In a comprehensive study of all public, multiple-shooting incidents in America between 1977 and 1999, the highly regarded economists John Lott and Bill Landes found that concealed-carry laws were the only laws that had any beneficial effect. And the effect was not small. States that allowed citizens to carry concealed handguns reduced multiple-shooting attacks by 60 percent and reduced the death and injury from these attacks by nearly 80 percent … School shootings that have been halted were almost always stopped by the happenstance of an armed citizen on school property ... And then the next killer will come along with a different arsenal and a different motive, and the only way to stop him will be with an armed citizen with a gun.”  (2/3/11)

“The idea that trained police or soldiers can protect us at all times is a dangerous illusion …  Both organized terrorism and random lunacy have been halted by quick-thinking civilians in recent years. In countless incidents of isolated crime, which don’t usually make headlines, armed and trained citizens have saved lives.  In other cases, it all comes down to men and women of remarkable alacrity and courage, who put murderers on their backs in the carpeted aisles of airplanes, or the rough asphalt of grocery-store parking lots. The Tucson atrocity has prompted the usual tedious calls for more gun laws. The distinguishing characteristic of every ‘gun-free utopia’ on earth is a mountain of bullet-riddled corpses. The great wisdom of our Second Amendment is that self-defense is an inalienable right of free men and women.  Stripped of that right, they are sheep … The spirit of the Second Amendment ultimately extends beyond firearms, because there are situations where they just won’t do the job … Self-defense, like every other right, is also a responsibility. The heroes of Tucson discharged that responsibility with distinction.” (1/10/11)

“In Brazil, I am required to register a gun I possess and the government is the only one who can decide whether I can keep it—only after paying the $2,000 in registration fees. This is where you Americans are headed if you do not hold on to your Second Amendment rights ... My Country has been taken by communists ... Today, Brazil is under attack from the ‘Silent Revolution,’ whose roots are in the writings of the Italian Antonio Gramsci. Gramsci wrote that the way to wage a silent revolution was to take over critical parts of society, such as the press, the educational system, the courts and the unions … The last step in this revolution was the government’s move to grab our guns and our self-defense rights … a father, a law abiding citizen cannot have a single short-hand gun to keep his family safe. He is treated like a criminal … Sadly, the direct result of this loss of freedom is the sharp increase in crime, such as the current level of 50,000 violent deaths every year.” (6/7/11)

“A fundamental principle of a free people is the ability to transfer property to someone else without government intervention. In the case of firearms, it is often a tradition to pass on a gun from one generation to another … Anti-gun liberals know that more bureaucracy on law abiding citizens is the easiest form of gun control and hidden under the label of ‘common sense gun measures.’ If the government can make criminals out of people that have never committed a criminal act with administrative measures then … Then they accomplish what they set out to do; stop legal citizens from owning guns … take a closer look at those that are committing the crimes and focus on punishing the perpetrators rather than building a bureaucracy that is targeted at legal gun owners.”  (3/15/11)

“Special Agent Andrew Traver has just been appointed by our current President, Barack Hussein Obama, to be the new head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives … President Obama’s newest appointee to the ATF has spent his long career with the agency espousing numerous and varied gun control and anti-gun activities … Columnist Kevin Williamson of National Review refers to Travers’ appointment in the following terms: ‘Andrew Traver [is] an episodically dishonest campaigner against Americans’ right to keep and bear arms” … He goes on to say that the agency  ‘…certainly should not be entrusted to a man with documented hostility toward Americans’ ancient constitutional rights and a remarkably backward view of the role firearms play in American criminal violence.’ This from Chris Cox of the National Rifle Association: ‘You might as well put an arsonist in charge of the fire department.’  Yet another thought from a prominent supporter of Second Amendment rights upon hearing of Obama’s appointment of Traver:  ‘He's picked a strong anti-Second Amendment person for an administrative job that has far more influence over the practical exercise of Second Amendment rights than any other job in the country.’" (1/4/11)

“For the past 50 years, the Democrats -- and many Republicans who should know better -- have been wrong about virtually every major domestic policy issue. Let's review some of them … Taxes … Welfare … Education … Gun control … Professor John Lott, author of ‘More Guns, Less Crime,’ says: ‘There is a strong negative relationship between the number of law-abiding citizens with permits and the crime rate: As more people obtain permits, there is a greater decline in violent crime rates. For each additional year that a concealed handgun law is in effect, the murder rate declines by 3 percent, rape by 2 percent and robberies by over 2 percent.’" (12/23/10)

In it I’ll talk about the skills you and your family will need to live in a world without electricity and without the rule of law. “Teach your kids they are a part of something greater than themselves. Teach them when they’re young that the family needs them. It will strengthen the unit and give them self esteem in the process. This aspect of preparedness is the most important, but also the most difficult to attain, because it depends on the cooperation of others. Anyone can buy a case of beans and bullets, but that doesn’t make them a survivalist any more than owning a rifle makes them a marksman. Listen to this next statement and take it to heart: ‘After societal collapse, you must place your life in the hands of your children.’ Think about it. You can’t survive alone. The most obvious people to hinder or help will be your own family.” (12/3/10)

“Imagine for a moment that you are a property owner whose neighborhood has been repeatedly victimized by acts of trespassing, theft, murder, and other forms of criminal violence ... For months, heck, for years, you and your neighbors have repeatedly contacted local law enforcement authorities to report the crimes against your property, and for years you have been told that help is on the way. But help never comes … Overcome by frustration and growing fear and convinced of no other options, neighborhood residents decide to take matters into their own hands in order to protect themselves … the police announce they are bringing suit against the residents for illegally usurping the role of law enforcement. ‘If your lives and property are being threatened,’ so the argument goes, ‘the only entity legally authorized to protect you is us, the police. Whether or not we choose to actually protect you is irrelevant; you have no right to take action on your own behalf.’ Such a scenario is ludicrous, yet this is exactly what's happening in Arizona ... Not only is this a gross example of federal bureaucratic arrogance run amok, it is a severe assault on the Constitution and our republic.” (7/25/10)

“The U.N. program of action concerning SALW includes restrictions on the manufacturing, storing, transferring and possession of firearms and ammunition … John Bolton, US Representative to the UN under the George W. Bush administration, says, ‘The [Obama] administration is trying to act as though this is really just a treaty about international arms trade between nation states, but there’s no doubt--as was the case back over a decade ago--that the real agenda here is domestic firearms control’ … You can’t argue that stricter gun control and fewer guns owned by citizens would diminish gun violence when looking at the facts. If a country were to confiscate its citizen’s guns by national law, it would leave guns in the hands of only the government and criminals. I’m not sure which group is more terrifying. When criminals are the only people who possess handguns, law-abiding citizens are powerless to defend themselves. This makes non-criminals easy targets and gun crimes rise respectively. This was proven to all countries when England enacted a ban on ownership of handguns in 1997. Two years after the gun ban had gone into effect the Countryside Alliance's Campaign for Shooting found that the use of handguns in crime had risen 40%.” (7/25/10)

“The new edition, which includes data and analysis from 39 states and now covers 29 years (1977-2005), will make it much more difficult for Lott’s critics and anti-gun groups to continue their attempts to disarm law-abiding Americans … Lott presents the most thorough and credible analysis of the effects of concealed handguns and crime rates. Any serious discussion by the media, legislative bodies and the courts must include a thorough reading of the 2010 edition of More Guns, Less Crime. The opinion of anyone who has not read the book but who professes an understanding of the effects of concealed handguns on crime rates should not be taken seriously.” (5/30/10)

“As shown in the forthcoming third edition of my book, ‘More Guns, Less Crime,’ before the ban, Chicago's murder rate was falling relative to the nine other largest cities, the 50 largest cities, the five counties that border Cook county, as well as the U.S. as a whole. After the ban, Chicago's murder rate rose relative to all these other places … Rather than making it so that the law-abiding citizens are safe, a ban means that criminals are safe and have little reason to worry about their victims defending themselves. There is a reason why every gun ban results in higher murder rates. If Daley can’t make himself do the right thing and let Chicagoans defend themselves, possibly the Supreme Court will fix things.” (5/6/10)

"Even a simple guy like me can figure out these words from the U.S. Constitution: 'The right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.' That's contained in the Second Amendment. So why did four Supreme Court justices this week vote to infringe on the right to bear arms? ... A smart fifth-grader understands all that, but apparently four Supreme Court justices do not ... My opinion on gun control changed drastically when I saw the chaos in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Armed bands of looters in boats cruised the city taking pretty much anything they wanted because the local police presence had collapsed. If you had remained in town in order to protect your property, you would have been at the mercy of these looters unless you had the firepower to ward them off. That is why all Americans have the right to bear arms ... The Supreme Court is just one justice away from giving Ginsburg and her leftist crew the power to completely usurp the Constitution. Be very afraid." (7/3/10)

“Criminals have the initiative. They choose the time, place and manner of their crimes, and they tend to make choices that maximize their own, not their victims', success. So criminals don't attack people they know are armed, and anyone thinking of committing mass murder is likely to be attracted to a gun-free zone, such as schools and malls. Government may promise to protect us from criminals, but it cannot deliver on that promise. This was neatly summed up in book title a few years ago: ‘Dial 911 and Die.’ If you are the target of a crime, only one other person besides the criminal is sure to be on the scene: you. There is no good substitute for self-responsibility. How, then, does it make sense to create mandatory gun-free zones, which in reality are free-crime zones? … The usual suspects keep calling for more gun control laws. But this idea that gun control is crime control is just a myth. The National Academy of Sciences reviewed dozens of studies and could not find a single gun regulation that clearly led to reduced violent crime or murder. When Washington, D.C., passed its tough handgun ban years ago, gun violence rose …‘If someone gets into your house, which would you rather have, a handgun or a telephone? You can call the police if you want, and they'll get there, and they'll take a picture of your dead body. But they can't get there in time to save your life. The first line of defense is you.’" (7/3/10)

“Should honest, law-abiding citizens (not subjects) need the government’s permission to carry concealed, to carry openly, or to even transport or possess the tool to defend ourselves and our families. I think not ... We must learn from our history or we are doomed to repeat it. The Civil war had to be fought because basic human rights were being violated on a massive scale with no end in sight. The wrong had to be made right. It resulted in hundreds of thousands of dead men, women, and children. Do we really want it to come to that … failure to defend the Second Amendment leaves them complicit in the loss of our freedom.” (3/9/10)

“Sixteen peer-reviewed studies show that allowing citizens to lawfully carry [firearms] reduces violent crime rates … Nonetheless, the Brady bunch continues to fight for laws that will cause themselves and others to remain helpless in the face of criminal assault.” (2/23/10)

“Careful, Mr. Rall. You’re talking about testing the ultimate last-resort purpose behind the Second Amendment. Some of us armed Americans take our Bill of Rights seriously and will not go gentle into that good night … You and your fellow travelers are playing a most dangerous game.” (January 2010)

Madison understood that because inalienable rights are God-given rights, they are also God-given duties. In other words, we don’t just have the right to keep and bear arms, but also the duty to do so … Rights are important, but rights alone will not keep us free, for they are static. What we need are more Americans who understand they’ve a duty to defend (and protect) those rights. It is through the execution of this duty that 21st century Americans join ranks with our Founding Fathers in risking ‘[their] lives, [their] fortunes, and [their] sacred honor’ for a cause greater than themselves. The cause is freedom itself, and it’s ours to uphold.” (1/17/10)

Rifles for Target, Hunting, and Self Defense

Anyone who owns, uses, stores, or is in the vicinity of, firearms should cautiously follow all laws and safety rules. Firearm safety certification classes are highly recommended. Anyone without training, experience, and maturity should be carefully supervised.

Those on a limited budget might want to consider .22 rifles for target, hunting (small game), or self defense purposes. In spite of what the movies show, the average person cannot shoot a pistol accurately enough to hit a target at 50 feet without extensive practice. The Mossberg Plinkster (about $100), the Marlin model 60 (about $150), and the Ruger 10/22 (about $200), semi-auto rifles are generally reliable and accurate. As the price goes up, so does the quality. Twenty two (.22) caliber ammunition is less powerful but costs a fractional amount (about $20 for 500 rounds) of the price of higher power alternatives (between $25 and $120 for 100 rounds). The Marlin is tube fed with a capacity of 14 shots. The Mossburg and the Ruger have removable magazines with a capacity of 10. Higher capacity magazines for the Ruger can currently be purchased in most states.

A scope is not necessary but can enhance accuracy. The small (three quarter inch tube diameter) Tasco 4X15 or Simmons 4X20 rimfire scopes (less than $10 including mounts) work OK. If a higher quality (one inch diameter) rifle scope is desired, the Simmons Blazer or Simmons 8-Point 4X32 (about $25) work well. The Tasco 3-9X40 (about $30) works well if you want higher magnification and don’t mind the larger size. Most one inch diameter scopes require separate ringmounts. Leupold .22 Rimfire Ringmonts ($12) work well with the Mossberg and Marlin receiver groves. The Leupold #56533 is a low profile mount and  #57323 is a high see-though mount. For the Ruger, the Weaver #49711 high see-through ringmounts ($11) screw solidly into the receiver. These items are generally available at Walmart or cheaperthandirt.com.
